Charity Begins At Home

Bonsai Heirloom is having a fundraiser to help the LA fire victims. It is hard to imagine that such horrific devastation could happen.

A $1 donation from each of our YouTube subscribers around the world would get us $158,000! Together, we can show the world that the BH community is a caring community.

Also, I am donating my favorite bonsai – a trident maple that I started from a seed and worked on for 27 years – to be auctioned in an auction for U.S. residents only (due to shipping restrictions).

The starting bid is $25,000. Please be generous. You’ll have an opportunity to own one of my trees and, as the proud owner of a “million-dollar” bonsai, be remembered for your generosity.

100% of the proceeds will go to the Caltech and JPL Disaster Relief Fund, which supports the affected staff, faculty, and students of my alma mater, the California Institute of Technology, and the space exploration program it manages. You can read more about the fund here: https://giving.caltech.edu/areas-to-support/relief

This drive ends on Friday, March 28th. Thank you in advance for your generosity. We appreciate your support!

Scientific nameAcer buergerianum var. formosanum

Origin: Taiwan

Distinguishing feature: Leaves of this variant are thicker and more glossy than the trident maples usually sold in the US. Leaves can better endure summer heat without being burned readily. New leaves are red initially before turning green.

Style: Informal upright

History: This is my most exhibited bonsai; it is everyone’s favorite. Most people are surprise that I started this tree from a seed.

It is one of the 5 saplings from seeds collected in an arboretum in 1998.

Partially trained by cutting back while in the ground to create turns and taper. Interesting root formation actually occurred under the soil surface.

Dug in 2013 to grow in a 20 gallon nursery pot.

Moved to an oversized bonsai 2015.

Moved to the current bonsai pot in 2018, and is being pruned three times a year to refine the design.
