Bonsai Heirloom

You can keep a bonsai alive. We'll prove it.

5–10 minutes a week, a pot that forgives you, and a guarantee if it doesn't work out.

Start Here

Start here

One tree, two ways to start.

Every starting tree we sell is the same tree — grown from seed in Pescadero, trained through its early years by the nursery. The only question is who takes it from here.

The first way — You shape it.

Japanese Maple Pre-Bonsai

Pre-Bonsai

$95

A healthy young tree with its early training done — roots settled, trunk on its way. Every cut from here is yours. Three species, always in stock.

Prefer it as a set? The DIY Bonsai Kit pairs a Pre-Bonsai with the pot it grows into and a pair of clippers — everything discounted 10% when bought together.

Choose your species

The second way — We finished it for you.

Japanese Maple, Starter Bonsai

Melmac Starter Bonsai

$145

The same tree, styled and potted by the nursery — ready to sit on your windowsill the day it arrives. Your work begins at watering, not wiring. Three species, always in stock.

Want a rarer tree in a nicer pot? Our Signature Bonsai are finished trees in handmade Yixing ceramic — larger sizes and occasional rare varieties, released as limited drops.

Collector drops

Some trees can't be restocked.

Can't be scheduled. Can't be repeated.

Every listing here is a limited drop — from a $295 small bonsai to trees that run several thousand dollars, each finished in handmade Yixing ceramic. Sold-out pages stay up on purpose: every release keeps its own listing, photographed the season it dropped, so you can see how the same species changes from one year to the next.

Rare trees drop a few times a year. Our newsletter subscribers get access to them first — and, often, they are the only ones who get them. View the drop archive →

Our Philosophy

The "Lifestyle" Bonsai Method

Caring for bonsai should accommodate your lifestyle, not the other way around. Sixty years of practice, distilled into a method that fits inside a normal week.

Learn the Method
Why it works

Built for people with lives.

5–10 minutes a week

Watering, a look at the leaves, an occasional trim. The method is built to fit inside a normal week — not to take it over.

Species that forgive

We grow varieties chosen for resilience — trees that shrug off a missed watering and tell you clearly what they need.

30-day replacement

If it dies, we replace it — no questions. The guarantee exists so you can relax, which is most of what a tree asks of you.

Milton Chang in the Pescadero nursery

Our Founder

Sixty years of patience, one tree at a time.

Milton Chang learned bonsai from John Naka and Harry Hirao, the fathers of American bonsai. Every tree we sell has passed through the methods they taught him — practiced for sixty years on the Pescadero coast.
