Japanese Cork Pine 1

Scientific name: Pinus Thunbergii 'Corticosa’

Origin: Japan

Distinguishing feature: Cork bark. This is a variant of Japanese black pine, likely to be a selected version of the Arakawa variety. Note the disjoint where it is grafted. This is acceptable because it is usually grafted onto black pine. Trees from cuttings can be found in Japan but rarely if ever in the US because the yield is extremely low, a very small percentage takes.

History: This bonsai was purchased at the Mammoth  auction in 2021. This tree was probably imported 50 years ago based on the thickness of the cork bark.

I combed out the root ball and repotted in my standard soil mix and it is now healthy and growing rapidly.

Highly desirable cork bark
